Germany offers help in leprosy fight

The Consulate General of Germany, Chennai, has offered to help Sivananda Rehabilitation Home (SRH) pool up more funds for its leprosy centre and referral hospital.

German Consul Christiane Cranshaw visited different wings of SRH, including the hospital-cum-rehabilitation centre for leprosy patients, rehabilitation home for tuberculosis and AIDS patients, orphanage for HIV positive children and general hospital.

Honorary secretary of SRH J. Vikramdev Rao took Ms. Cranshaw around the campus.

The German Consul earlier handed over a Maruti van and a mini goods transport vehicle funded by the Consulate for the leprosy home to Mr. Vikramdev Rao.

Explaining the activities of SRH since it was founded in 1958 by his mother Rani J. Kumudini Devi, Mr. Rao said it was unfortunate that funding for treatment of leprosy patients had come down drastically both from the government and overseas organisations like German Leprosy Relief Association (GLRA).

Chief administrator of SRH P. Hrishikesh, said that they had about 450 inmates in the leprosy home and about 25 out-patients come for check-up and treatment everyday. The home had a 200-bed referral hospital with facilities like physiotherapy, reconstructive surgery, orthopaedic workshop, x-ray and clinical sections. Though the Government of India had declared in 2005 that leprosy was eradicated, the incidence of the disease was on the rise again. The incidence of leprosy in slums of Hyderabad (15-lakh population) in 1978 was 90.3 per 10,000, but it was brought down to 0.67 by 2003 by SRH, he explained. However, lack of early detection due to the disbanded national programme had led to increase in the incidence to about 10 now, though exact statistics were not available in the absence of any survey since 2005.
